Pittsfield Goes International
This October, emerging London artists, Alex Gough and Lee Maelzer, come to Pittsfield for a month long residency at the Storefront Artist Project.
This landmark event is a part of Storefront Artists Project’s continued effort to bring art and artists to Pittsfield’s cultural landscape. This international exchange has been made possible through the collaboration of University of the Arts London Assistant Curator and Berkshire native, Medeia Cohen, who selected Mr. Gough and Ms. Lee from UAL’s many recent graduates. Alex Gough’s oil and India ink paintings of the sky at twilight explore “the colour blue and its evocative qualities that can reveal notions of the sublime”. Gough says of his current series that “These paintings are not just about looking into the sky at dusk, but about being taken to a dreamy place of isolation; representations of one’s memories.”
A graduate of the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, Lee Maelzer’s current paintings are haunting images of interior and exterior squalor. In addition to painting, Lee will be creating a short film during her residency, with the aim to project the work at the closing of the residency.
A preview of the artist’s work will be held from 5-8 on this season’s last 3rd Thursday, October 18th.
The public is also invited to join the Storefront Artist Project to welcome Mr. Gough and Ms. Lee at an opening reception on Saturday the 20th from 5:30-7:30 .
Work created during the residency will be shared with the public in a closing reception on November 17th, 5:30-7:30.
All events will be held at the Storefront Artist Project’s 124 Fenn Street mainspace.
